From Minute One to Greensboro College

I remember when I first saw Mohamedali.
He had a white Michael Phelps Foundation cap on, a giant bag full of training gear, and hair — boy, did he have some hair!
At the time, I was usually focused on training my daughter at the YMCA pool. But while I was watching her swim, Mohamedali was quietly watching us train too.
One day, after practice, he approached me and asked something like:
“Are you a coach?”
It’s hard to believe that was about four years ago now.
Back then, I had no idea how much that simple conversation would eventually mean to both of us.
Since then, Mohamedali’s journey has become deeply connected to the story of Rip Current Sports itself.
Around the same time, I was building Rip Current Sports while teaching swimmers of all ages — from young athletes to adults who had gone decades without ever truly learning freestyle. Meanwhile, Mohamedali’s family had come to the United States from Kenya seeking medical care for his younger brother. Through all of life’s uncertainty, Mohamedali found comfort and purpose in the water.
Then life threw another challenge his way: discovering his own heart condition, which eventually required stent surgery for Coarctation of the Aorta.
Still, he kept swimming.
I’ll be honest — when I first watched Mohamedali swim, I didn’t immediately think I was looking at a future college swimmer.
But there was something different about him.
Not every young athlete sparks conversation the way Mohamedali did. There was curiosity, passion, and a genuine love for swimming that kept drawing me back in.
The very first minute I ever trained him, I put Dual Boards on his hands.

Then hundreds.
Then thousands.
Over the years, Dual Boards became part of the process — helping Mohamedali continue learning body position, balance, alignment, and confidence in the water. More importantly, swimming itself became a place where resilience was built day after day.
For Coaches, Teams, and Swim Schools
Dual Boards help swimmers feel better balance, body position, rotation, and kicking mechanics immediately — creating faster learning and stronger body alignment in the water.

To this day, I’m still not entirely sure whether Mohamedali likes me more or Dual Boards more. To be fair, I can be pretty demanding.
What I do know is this:
He kept showing up.

Again and again.
Hard sets.
Long conversations.
Ups and downs.
Training sessions after surgery.
Training sessions before races.
Training sessions simply because he loved being in the water.
And now, after thousands of minutes in the pool together, Mohamedali has officially accepted an offer to continue both his academic and swimming career at Greensboro College.
Not every athlete relationship unfolds this way, and that was never the business model of Rip Current Sports. Sometimes swimming simply brings people together at the right moment in life.
Mohamedali’s story is not about perfection.
Anyone who knows him around Montgomery County, Maryland, the DMV, and beyond knows that.
But they also know this:
He loves swimming.
Truly loves it.
And that passion carried him farther than many people ever expected.
Congratulations, Mohamedali!
We’re proud of you and excited to watch what comes next.
