Roy Fagin’s Impact on the DMV Swim Community

Roy Fagin’s Impact on the DMV Swim Community

In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighting incredible individuals who have shaped the swimming community and inspired generations of swimmers. Today, we recognize Roy Fagin, a dedicated coach and advocate for swimming in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area. His tireless efforts have introduced countless young swimmers to the water, breaking barriers and fostering a love for the sport in communities where access to swimming has historically been limited.

A Champion for Swimming Access

Roy Fagin has spent years working to increase swim participation among D.C. public school students, recognizing that access to swimming is not just about recreation—it’s a life-saving skill. He has been instrumental in helping students, particularly in underserved communities, learn to swim and build confidence in the water.

Swimming programs in D.C. have faced challenges, from lack of school pool access to funding issues. Despite these obstacles, Fagin’s commitment has remained steadfast. His work has brought awareness to the importance of making swim lessons more accessible, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to become a strong, confident swimmer.

Breaking Barriers in Aquatics

Historically, Black communities have faced systemic barriers to swimming access, leading to lower participation rates and higher drowning statistics. Leaders like Roy Fagin are actively working to change that narrative by providing representation, guidance, and opportunities for young swimmers to thrive. His presence in the DMV swim scene has encouraged more families to see swimming not just as a sport, but as an essential skill for safety and personal growth.

A Legacy of Empowerment

Fagin’s work reminds us that creating swimmers isn’t just about competition—it’s about empowerment, inclusion, and saving lives. His advocacy has strengthened the local swim community, and his influence will be felt for generations to come.

At Rip Current Sports, we are incredibly grateful for leaders like Roy Fagin, who are making waves in the swimming world. His passion for the sport and dedication to accessibility align with our own mission: to help swimmers of all levels learn, grow, and succeed in the water.

💙 Thank you, Roy Fagin, for all you do for the swim community!
